Since becoming a mom ( seriously cannot believe it has been 10 years now) it’s been a true joy to create Holiday traditions of my own. Now don’t get me wrong, both my husband and myself have carried on some of our childhood traditions but it’s been amazing to figure out what our kids love most, and continuing to do them over each of the following years. Naturally ( being an obvious Disney fan) quite a few of our favourite Halloween actives have a Disney twist to them, and I’m excited to share them with you.
Usually we go ahead and start decorating our house just before October 1. I know some of you are cringing at the though of this… but in all honestly decorating is a lot of work, Annnd if I’m continuing to be honest sometimes, just sometimes it’s not always all fun 😭 it’s a lot of work going up into our attic carrying down box after box, putting away current house decor while the spooky stuff comes out. So with that being said, I definitely want to get my money’s worth ( so to speak). This is why I like to have our Halloween decor up for at least a month. I’m planning to decorate this week, so if you follow me on Instagram I will be posting some of my fav Halloween pieces as we go🎃
Another thing that I like to get a head start on is my kids costumes. Each year that follows I find more and more people are also jumping the gun on this. Stores sell out quickly and delivery times get bumped closer and closer to the big trick or treating day. Things sell out fast 💨 and god forbid they sell out your kids costume because that would be a “travesty” in your child’s eyes. I know there are other moms out there that disagree with me on this.. Their strongest point being that kids change there mind quickly. I make my kids think hard and strong about there decision and it’s quite simple money does not grow on trees. So once we have bought our costumes, they don’t get switched! This was last year 2017❤️ Sally ( the nightmare before Christmas), Nemo ( finding nemo), and the Blue LEGO ninjago!
The previous year ( 2016) my Hocus pocus witch, buzz light year and pikachu
– I cannot wait to see how adorable they are this year. Plus we have added a new family member… our new puppy Jack-jack!! We also just recently ordered a costume for him. ❤️
After we have both those activities off our check list, next we love to bake and make treats. Our favourite items are: candy apples, sugar cookies, candied popcorn aswell as cupcakes. I will be sharing some of our favourite recipes very soon as we are making one of those items in the next few days. This year we are going to be recreating our favourites in Mickey shapes 😍 Another one of our favourite activities is making “haunted mansion” for those who are not familiar with them, they are a lot like a Christmas ginger bread house with a Halloween twist. We usually purchase ours from Michael’s. I love buying them from Michael’s because they usually have an option to buy with the house already assembled, which can save a lot of time, and even some tears 🤣 I will also be sharing our finished products on Instagram, I will be sure to upload a picture onto this aswell.
Now, it wouldn’t be Halloween without a few spooky movies 😍 ABC ( free form) has amazing line up. It was far to long for me to post so I will share the link instead 👇
Our personal must see Halloween movies are:
the nightmare before Christmas//Hocus Pocus//frankenweenie// toystorys toy horror//Charlie Brown and the great pumpkin // curious George Halloween fest// corpse bride
We usually watch all of these multi times 🙂 We love snuggling up on the couch. Sometimes cancelling all your Saturday plans staying in your Pj’s with a bucket of popcorn and a hot soup cooking in your crock pot is just the best.
*One of my favourite ways to incorporate the smell of fall into your house without constantly burning a candle is to take a Pot, fill it with water and some orange peels and a t-spoon of cinnamon 😍 put it on a low setting. It’s amazing! If you have not tried this, try it tonight.
This year, we decided to create a “fall jar” as-well. This jar is literally a mason jar with Popsicle sticks that each have an idea of an activity to our whole family can do. Each weekend we are going to allow one of our kids ( we will rotate through each kid) to pick one stick out of the jar and do that activity
Next comes Halloween eve 🎃! Like most families we carve our pumpkins. We usually go on line pick a free download design or just free hand it. Nothing out of the ordinary for this.
Lastly, Halloween night 👻. In the past we have gone with groups of our close friends, however we find that we really like going just with our family. When you go with a larger group of kids it’s hard to have everyone stick together. We have also realized there will only be so many times we will have the opportunity to do activities like this with our kids and we really value spending special moments like this. I usually cook an early meal and help get the kids ready. We like to head out the door around 530/6pm and return around 8pm. For the last few years my husband has gotten fire works and set them off at our home as a grand finale to our Halloween season. We love to put on a spooky movie and relax by our fireplace, snacking on some of the goodies that were collected while trick or treating.
Does your family have a special Halloween tradition? I would love to hear all about it. Thank you so much for reading. And Happy Halloween 🎃👻
